Zaki Ibrahim : Only South African Showcasing at MIDEM

Saturday 28th January : 10 PM DaDaDa : 15 rue de Freres Pradignac, Cannes

This is a mixtape Zubz and Tumi did in 3 days. They hadn’t worked together the whole of last yer and that felt unusual. December always brings back memories of that golden era of kwaito and it was this nostalgia that ispired them to make a kwaito mixtape. The approach was not to over think the process, just do what comes and set a three day limit to complete it. Our engineer Instro chopped up the old school kwaito hits and they wrote 3 songs a day. “We not trying to ride on anybody’s fame or glory, we just wanted to reinterpret some of our favourite kwaito tunes and try and relive those magic moments, but most importantly pay homage to the original artists.” Tumi said.

This shoot happened in Toronto while Zaki was in the city to do a performance for Manifesto’s Live @ the Square. My amazingly talented friend Tanika Charles had invited me a week before this shoot to come to the “The Hive” studio while she was working on some demos with Zaki for her new album. Wow!!! Being in the studio with those two goddesses was an incredible experience. Watching them harmoniously play off of each other was a delight. It was also there that I met Alister “DJ Catalist” Johnson who was recording the session for the ladies. Later after the recording session Zaki played a new song that her and DJ Catalist had freshly laid down. It was the “Something In The Water”. I guess the vibe was so nice in the studio that day that a few days later I received a call from Catalist asking if I would be interested in shooting some more video for SITW. We ended up meeting again at “The Hive” where Zaki and DJ Catalist were recording another song. We talked about “Something In The Water” and how it was conceived very organicly. September 2011 was great in terms of inspiration and productivity. I think all three of us were riding out a similar creative high in our own respective artforms. We also spoke about shooting a guerilla video for the song. So look out for this studio session with Zaki Ibrahim and DJ Catalist real soon amongst other visual delights.

Who is PERFECTO

Kung-fu flicks, philosophy and filmmaking all form a part of Perfecto’s approach to the art of rhyming. Born in Maseru and raised in Johannesburg and Ghana, Perfecto studied film at the New York Film Academy, an experience that has had a major impact on his creative process. He has a supple flow and graphic lyrics that leap out at you from his darkly atmospheric beats. “It’s about issues affecting society and feeling out of place,” he says of his content. “I like to keep a raw sense of my interpretation to MCing. My content reminds listeners of how it used to be done and my delivery is from an era that is truly dying.”
